The fly-out picnic is a go! Found a great site, bought the food, just need pilots and planes. The NWT Floatplane Association is hosting the picnic on Saturday, July 11, 2015. The destination is Meander Lake, which is 63.5 nautical miles east of Yellowknife. Coordinates are 62.37.827 and 112.5.581. Join us there any time after 10:30 am for smokies and great conversation.
We've had some really interesting and unique planes attend the Midnight Sun Fly In over the years. Here's a look at a few of our favorites. We can't wait to see who shows up this year!
Parking is available at the YZF airport for wheel planes attending the Midnight Sun Fly In. Parking is permitted on taxiway KILO or on a large gravel area adjacent to the FBO. Parking fees will be waived during the fly-in. Pilots must bring their own tie-downs. Camping is not available on the airport property but the Fred Henne campground is located nearby. The campground has tent sites which must be reserved online through the NWT Parks reservation website.
Fly In volunteers will be operating a shuttle service from the airport for participants arriving on wheels. Contact us on arrival at 867-446-8126 and we will dispatch a vehicle.
Intermittent smoky conditions have returned to Yellowknife due to forest fire activity throughout the Northwest Territories and western Canada. Visibility, both horizontal and vertical, can change rapidly in smoke, creating conditions unsuitable for VFR flight. Pilots are advised to exercise caution in flight planning and to obtain current information as to prevailing conditions and forecasts.
Pursuant to CARS, no unauthorized person is permitted to operate an aircraft over a forest fire area, or over any area located within 5 nautical miles of a forest fire, at an altitude of less than 3,000 feet AGL. NOTAM’s may be issued when a particular fire requires an abundance of aviation resources to support suppression efforts. Additional information can be found in the Wildland Fire Airspace brochure published by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. A copy can be downloaded from the link appearing on our pilot resources page.
