The success of the Midnight Sun Fly In depends on the effort and enthusiasm of the members of the Midnight Fly In Association and its dedicated volunteers. The organizing committee begins preparations far in advance but additional volunteers are always needed to assist during the Fly In weekend.
Please complete and submit our Volunteer Application to indicate interest in volunteering for the "flight crew" at the 2017 Midnight Sun Fly In. Areas in which volunteers will be required include site preparation, registration and greeting, ground transportation, beverage service, site security, entrance gate and ticket collection, site clean-up and general errands. A volunteer orientation session will be conducted shortly before the Fly In to familiarize volunteers with the event and their assignments.
The Midnight Sun Fly In Association is grateful for the support of the City of Yellowknife as a title sponsor of the 2017 Midnight Sun Fly In. Grant funding provided by the City is vital to the viability of the event and is greatly appreciated. All Yellowknife residents are welcome to participate in public events throughout the Fly In weekend.
We recently stumbled across a blog article that truly captures the essence of the Midnight Sun Fly In. In "Hug a Bush Pilot Today", Kathryn Birchwood of FrozenTrini features the 2015 Midnight Sun Fly In and acknowledges the bush pilots who helped open up the Canadian North.
In her words, "Without the bush pilots of the early 20th century, there would probably not have been a city of Yellowknife, a large-scale Northern mining industry, nor would the North have become as accessible as it is today. These days they still fly people and cargo to and from the bush, whether it be geologists on an exploration trip, or hunters to bush-camps or cabins, or taking supplies for crews battling wild fires."
The Annual General Meeting of the Midnight Sun Fly-in Association will take place on Tuesday, November 22, 2016, at 7:00 pm, at the Northern Frontier Visitors Centre. The meeting will include an opportunity to purchase or renew memberships, a president's report and financial report for the fiscal year ending October 15, 2015, and the election of officers and directors.
It is important that that we try to expand the membership and bring new volunteers and ideas into the Association. Everyone is welcome to attend the AGM and join the Association. Planning for the 2017 Fly In is already underway!
